Why Kristi Noem Is in the Doghouse
  + stars: | 2024-05-06 | by ( A.O. Scott | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In April 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson was photographed lifting one of his beagles (he had two, named Him and Her) by the ears. Johnson won the 1964 presidential election in a landslide. Kristi Noem is no L.B.J. Appearing on “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Noem was unapologetic. She insisted that Cricket, whom she described in her book as an “untrainable” chicken-killer, got what was coming.

Another bad result is that zombie banks stay in operation longer than they should because uninsured depositors happily supply them with funds, knowing the F.D.I.C. is experiencing “mission creep,” taking on a responsibility for uninsured depositors that it was never assigned. In a footnote of a 2001 document posted on its website that’s intended to provide guidance to other nations’ regulators, it says that making uninsured depositors whole can be least costly “in rare cases.” (Which means: not more than 90 percent of the time.) staff members, referring to full bank liquidations in the period before the financial crisis, said “a least-cost resolution almost always includes imposing losses on uninsured depositors.” Another F.D.I.C. So I have to go by what the agency has stated in the past about its resolution practices.

Alaska is a dream to visit, but the winters are too cold and there aren't a lot of people. Toby Harriman/Getty ImagesAbbamonte said Alaska is one of the top three most beautiful places he's visited in the world, neck and neck with the Himalayas in Asia and Patagonia in South America. As someone who appreciates nature and wildlife, he loves visiting the national parks in Alaska, which has more than half of all the national parks in the US. AI Davids ride coattails of industry Goliaths

New York, Dec 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Artificial intelligence Goliaths like OpenAI continue to open the door for what might become the industry’s Davids. With a low-cost approach and data privacy focus, it may be able to eventually carve out a solid European business. Mistral has whiffs of what OpenAI, eyeing a mooted $86 billion valuation and eight years old, once was, but with tweaks. Mistral has also focused on “open sourcing” its models, which means they can be downloaded and used for free. As a Paris-based company, Mistral could build out its business with a specific focus on complying with AI rules being finalized by the European Union.
